Heatwave devastates Karachi, other parts of Sindh; at least 136 dead
KARACHI: Despite the Met office’s academic conclusion about Karachi’s weather sliding down a notch, a devastating heatwave gripping Sindh for several days has taken a toll of at least 136 people in the province — 132 only in the metropolis. Most of them were pronounced dead at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), officials said on Sunday.
They said 85 of the people who had suffered heatstroke were either brought dead or died in JPMC. Thirty people died in the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) on Saturday night and Sunday, nine in Lyari General Hospital and six in the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK).
“Some 85 people have died since late Saturday night,” Dr Seemin Jamali, joint executive director of JPMC, told Dawn.
Most of them were men aged 50 or more.

Dr Hasan Murad Shah, director general health, said that since it was Sunday the figures, if any, of the heatstroke patients might be landing his office on Monday.
Saturday was the hottest day of this year’s summer in Karachi, where the mercury had shot to 45 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature of 48 degree Celsius was recorded in three districts of Sindh — Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur — on Saturday, which slid down to 41 on Sunday.
The officials said the city would not see any let-up on Monday when temperatures are expected to go up to 44 degree Celsius.
The highest temperature Karachi ever experienced was 48 degree Celsius on May 9, 1938.

Karachi heatwave claims over 120 lives
KARACHI: The scorching heatwave that has gripped Karachi since the start of Ramazan claimed the lives of more than 120 people till late Sunday night, according to health and rescue officials.
“So far, we have received over 50 dead bodies at Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) since Saturday night,” said Dr. Seemin Jamali, head of the hospital’s emergency department.
Talking to media personnel, Dr. Jamali said mortality rate for patients with heat stroke was very high, which was why several of those admitted to JPMC alive could not be revived. She said in total more than 100 people, whether admitted alive or dead, had lost their lives owing to heat-related illnesses at JPMC alone.

　パキスタンの英字紙ドーン（電子版）によると、ここ数日間にわたって同国南部カラチを襲った熱波の影響で、２１日夜までに１２０人以上が死亡した。イスラム教が国教のパキスタンではラマダン（断食月）を迎え信者が日中の飲食を控えていることもあり、熱中症などの被害拡大が懸念される。
　カラチでは２０日の気温が今年最高となる４５度を記録したほか、シンド州サッカルなどでは最高気温が４８度に達した。

パキスタン最大の都市、南部のカラチでは、先週末から４０度を超える日が続き、２０日にはことしいちばんの暑さとなる４５度を記録しました。
この影響で、カラチとその周辺では熱中症などで病院に搬送される人が相次ぎ、地元メディアなどによりますと、２１日と２０日の２日間で１３６人が死亡したということです。
イスラム教徒が多数を占めるパキスタンでは断食月「ラマダン」に当たり、多くの人が日中の飲食を断っていることや、電力不足のため、たびたび停電したり、水道が止まったりするため、一層、体調不良を訴える人が増えたとみられています。
特に、日雇いの労働者などの貧困層や、高齢者を中心に犠牲者が増えているということで、気象当局は外出を控えたり、日光を遮る服装をするよう呼びかけています。
先月末から今月にかけては、隣国インドでも４０度以上を記録する日が続き、南部を中心に２１００人以上が死亡しています。

６月２０日（土）～２１日（日）にかけて死亡者が急増したという。

記録上のカラチの最高温度は１９３８年５月９日の摂氏４８度だというから、温暖化云々とは関わりなく異常高温となりやすい地域なのかもしれない。
