Julie Christie sings in “Far from the Madding Crowd”

Fall in love with Julie Christie, like Alan Bates, Peter Finch and all her farm workers. This brings a tear to the eye in the same way that bagpipes send a tingle down the spine.

\The last of three singles on the Dolton label for this trio of prolific musicians. Brothers, Bobby and Larry Brown along with Jack Greenbach had recorded previously as the Tides and also the Triplets for Dore Records, releasing six singles with the label between September 1959 and August 1961. ‘Can’t Face The Crowd’ is a slick percussive instrumental that is given some additional instrumentation by L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’, beefing it up but sadly it, along with the two prior Dolton releases failed to garner huge record sales.

The jazz pianist’s most popular single release was this instrumental take on Dobie Gray’s hit from earlier in the year. Recorded at the D.C. jazz club The Bohemian Caverns, the longer original LP track was edited down for the 45rpm release heard here.

Pat Galo – Out Of The Crowd(1965)

Out of New York, a slick Charles Calello arranged pop number by New Jersey lounge crooner, Pat Galo. Not only was pat a great vocalist but he could also a mean trumpet and flugel horn. After joining several bands in highschool, Pat later formed a five piece band called the Hi-Lads. The group utilized synchronized dance moves, comedy routines, and did impressions. So successful was the band that the Hi-Lads earned the honor of Las Vegas Lounge Act Of The Year several times. The group, and Pat as a solo artist, signed recording contracts with Columbia, Epic, RCA, and Charlie Parker records.

Pat Galo – Out Of The Crowd(1966/05)

This slick Charles Calello arranged pop number by New Jersey lounge crooner, Pat Galo with backing vocals by Denise Ferri, Peggy Santiglia and Bernadette Carroll was recorded at New York City’s Mirasound Studios in March 1966. The A-side,’Sundown’, would be issued one year later on the Lynde label utilizing the same backing track and background vocals with new lead vocal by the elusive, Servaas. Both the Deblyn and Lynde labels were owned by Jerry Ferrar who combined his daughters names when creating the label names;’Debra’ and’Lyn’). Composed by Bob Gaudio and Sandy Linzer,’Out Of The Crowd’ has a sound very much in the style of a Bob Crewe, Four Seasons production. It’s no wonder when reading the label credits as most of those listed worked along side Crewe at one time or another. The handclaps heard on this version were edited out for a 1968 reissue on the tiny, Shelby Singleton affiliated, Embassy Records label. Neither issue of’Out Of The Crowd’ appeared to have seen the light of day. Quite a shame since it is an excellent example of the mid 1960’s, east coast pop sound.
Not only was Pat a great vocalist but he could also play a mean trumpet and flugelhorn. After joining several bands in high school, Pat later formed a five piece band called the Hi-Lads.

Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs – I’m In With The Out Crowd(1966)

Mikie And The Ardons – Three’s A Crowd(Gallant:1966)

Out of New York, this disc which was recorded on January 28,1966 gets filed into the’sickeningly rare’ stack. A sweet, soulfully slick second incarnation of the Mikie Harris composition. (The first version she recorded in Florida in 1962 at the age of seventeen and pressed on the miniscule Mam’selle label).
It wasn’t until Mikie Harris left Sarasota, Florida for New York that she would set up a lucrative career as a background vocalist recording at many a session along with Jean Thomas, Ellie Greenwich (whom both are featured on background vocals for’Three’s a Crowd’), Lesley Miller and Valerie Simpson.
In addition to her extensive resume as an in-demand session singer, she was also a member of such short lived groups as Les Girls on Laurie and The Rag Dolls on Mala. She also recorded the’answer’ song to Bobby Vinton’s’Mister Lonely’ entitled,’Little Miss Lonely’.

The Lavells – In a Crowded Station(1968)

●”We catch glimpses of faces that have gone on before.”

●”Faces that we will not see anymore.”
●”The boy that’s within us wears an old man’s disguise.”

●”In our reflection we know that mirrors can’t lie.”
