彼女の自伝『Lady Sings the Blues Holiday』の中で、お金をめぐる母親との口論がこの曲のきっかけとなったと述べている。彼女は、口論中に母親が「自分のものを持った子供に神のご加護がありますように」というセリフを言ったと述べた。この事件に対する怒りから、彼女はその一節を曲の出発点に変え、共作者のアーサー・ヘルツォーク・ジュニアと協力して曲を作り上げた。
