農林水産省は3日、猛暑による家畜の被害状況に関する調査結果を発表した。全国（宮崎県を除く）で7月1日～8月15日に熱射病で死んだ家畜は、乳用牛が2008年の同時期に比べ36％増の959頭、豚が25％増の657頭、採卵鶏が2．4倍の13万6000羽、ブロイラー（肉用若鶏）が70％増の28万9000羽となった。

海を渡るチョウとして知られるアサギマダラの生態解明のため、「群馬の蝶（ちょう）を語る会」（広沢隆一代表）が８月下旬、嬬恋村でマーキングして放した２匹が、約２０キロ北の長野県高山村で捕獲されたことが分かった。アサギマダラはこの時期、秋の南への大移動に備え、少しずつ南下すると言われているが、北への移動が確認された。マーキングした同会の田島茂さんは「暑すぎるため涼しい地を求めて北に行ったのではないか」と話している。

アメリカの作曲家、ジョージ・ガーシュウィンは、オペラやミュージカル、それにクラシックで活躍したアメリカの作曲家で、その楽曲は多くのアーティストにカバーされ、世界中で親しまれています。
ガーシュウィンは、３８歳の若さで１９３７年に亡くなり、日本国内では１９９８年５月に著作権の保護期間が終了してすべての楽曲は、「パブリックドメイン」となっていました。
ところが、ＪＡＳＲＡＣによりますとこのうち３３７曲については、アメリカの著作権管理団体から提出された資料によって兄で作詞家のアイラ・ガーシュウィンとの共同著作物だと確認され、これにより、国内での著作権の保護期間は兄が亡くなった１９８３年が起点になったということです。
３３７曲の中には、ジャズのスタンダード・ナンバーとして親しまれている「サマータイム」や「サムワン・トゥ・ウォッチ・オーバー・ミー」などが含まれています。
ＪＡＳＲＡＣは、「これほど有名な作曲家で一度はパブリックドメインとなっていた楽曲の著作権管理を再開するケースは極めて珍しい」としています。

２０２２年３月１３日、ハワイなど一部地域を除いてアメリカは標準時を通常より１時間繰り上げる「夏時間（サマータイム）」に移行しました。この夏時間は２０２２年１１月６日に冬時間に戻りますが、２０２３年から夏時間を永久に冬時間に戻さないようにする「Sunshine Protection Act（日照保護法）」案がアメリカ連邦議会の上院で満場一致の可決を得ました。この法案がさらに下院で可決された上で大統領が署名すれば、アメリカでは２０２３年から「季節によって時間を変更する習慣」が廃止されることとなります。

アメリカでも「夏時間はやめるべき」と主張する声は多くなっており、２０２１年１１月にオンラインコミュニティサイトの YouGovAmerica が実施した調査によれば、アメリカ人の３分の２近くが「夏時間と冬時間で時計を調整するのは嫌だ」と回答しており、特に３０歳未満の若い世代から不満の声が上がっていることがわかりました。
今回の日照保護法案は２０１８年に議会へ提出され、２０２１年１月に再提出されたもので、１９１８年に制定された Standard Time Act（標準時法）と１９６６年に成立した Uniform Time Act（統一時間法）で定められた夏時間と冬時間の取り決めを廃止するものです。法案が施行されれば、２０２３年の春に夏時間へ移行した後、アメリカの標準時は永久に変更されないこととなります。
Sunshine Protection Act が上院の全会一致で可決されたことについて、ワシントン州のパティ・マレー上院議員は「冬の暗い午後はもういりません。毎年春に睡眠不足になるのはうんざりです。最も生産性が高い活動時間帯にもっと太陽の光を浴びたいと思います」とコメントしました。
なお、夏時間を恒久化する法案がアメリカで議論されたのはこれが初めてではなく、１９７４年～１９７５年の２年間にわたって標準時が通年で夏時間に固定されたことがありました。しかし、開始早々の１９７４年１月に６歳の女の子が通学中に車にはねられたことをきっかけに、「冬の早朝は暗いので、通学中の子どもにとって危険だ」という声が噴出したのと、１９７４年８月にニクソン政権がウォーターゲート事件で辞任したことで、夏時間の恒久化は取り消されました。＜「夏時間を恒久化する法案」が全会一致でアメリカ連邦議会上院を通過 – GIGAZINE より一部引用＞
