Danny Jordan – On The Outside Looking In(1962/08)
シングル “Runaround Sue’s Getting Married” のB面。

Recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City in July 1962, this is the flipside to’Runaround Sue’s Getting Married” which is the last of five known solo single discs issued by composer, vocalist producer, Danny Jordan. Curiously, there are no producer or arranger credits listed on the label.’On The Outside Looking In’ just so happens to be a popular title that was used for several different songs, the most popular was of course the composition written by Teddy Randazzo and Bobby Weinstein and made a hit by Little Anthony and the Imperials in 1964. This tune which was composed by Ben Raleigh, Artie Wayne and Danny Jordan has an arrangement that actually has the sound of the early ABC Paramount sessions that Teddy Randazzo oversaw with Steve Lawrence as well as on his own recordings with the label. Danny Jordan would go on to record some recordings as the Detergents for Roulette Records and then primarily dedicate his time to composing and producing for other recording artists.

Col James -(Oooh Looka There)Ain’t She Pretty(1962)

Johnny Angel – Look Look Little Angel(1962)

Dennis Bell – Please Don’t Tell Her You Saw Me(1962)

Dobie Gray – Look At Me (1962 unreleased Cordak Records stereo version)

In May and June of 1962, producer Fred Darian would book at least six session dates at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios to record a tune composed by Johnny Cole entitled,’Look at Me’. What would amass to a total of twelve 10 inch reels of recording tape that would involve a mind-blowing amount of splicing, editing and finagling galore, the end result was a September 1962 release of the recording on Darian’s Cordak label featuring the voice of Dobie Gray and the Blossoms. The song was a mild local hit that as soon as it simmered down, Fred Darian wasted no time in copying the backing track nearly note for note on Dobie’s follow-up,’Inka Dinka Doo’ for the JAF label. That one sparked brief local activity and then disappeared. It would be a year and a half before Dobie Gray achieved hit status with the classic,’The’In’ Crowd’ on the Charger label and the rest was as they say, history.
In October 2019, three Gold Star Studios 1965 Dobie Gray multi-track session tapes were discovered in New York from the estate of 1960’s L.A. record executive and owner of Thunderbird Records, Steve Brodie. Included on one of the 57 year old reels of Scotch recording tape but not noted on the outer label was’Look At Me’ sounding as impressive as if it were recorded today. Another version of’Look At Me’ also on that reel of tape was an awful and by songs end, unsuccessful attempt at replicating the’phasing’ effect heard on’The Big Hurt’ by Miss Toni Fisher’ which incidentally, was also recorded at Gold Star three years prior. A big thank you to engineer, Len Horowitz at History of Recorded Sound in Culver City, California for performing the analog to digital transfer.
Many thanks to STEVE HOFFMAN for his detailed accounting of the recording for’Look At Me’ which can be viewed at his website:

Lynette West – To Be With Him(On The Outside Looking In)(1963)

The elusive Los Angeles vocalist, Lynette West who in the early summer of 1963 had a single issued on the tiny BEE’n DEE label out of Los Angeles before it was quickly picked up and issued nationally on Jamie Records. The coupling of tunes,’If She Doesn’t Want You’ b/w’This Is Where I Came In’ were both composed and produced by Dotty Wayne and Ben Weisman who incidentally, were the owners of the first pressing record label. Well, not a speck of information regarding Miss West and her small recorded output could be found other than Jack Nitzsche provided the uncredited arrangements for the tunes. Fast forward 55 years and a wonderful musical discovery regarding Lynette West surfaced in the form of a dusty, United Recording double sided acetate containing two previously unissued and unknown recordings. The songs,’Boy, Let Me Tell You One Thing’ (copyright date: November 14, 1963) and’To Be With Him’ (copyright date and original title: December 4, 1963 -‘On The Outside Looking In’) typewritten with the same composers/producers involved with her first recordings, Ben Weisman and Dotty Wayne. Both tracks are lovely period L.A. girl pop and it sounds as if Miss West provided her own harmonic background vocals in the mix.
Sadly, Lynette West passed away in 2015 and hopefully more of her musical past will come to light and help to complete the missing pieces to her brief recording career.

Fuller Brothers – I Saw Her First(1965/06)
Monument レーベルのグループ。
Arranger: Ray Stevens

Not to be confused with the soul group by the same name or of the group that recorded for Challenge Records. This is the first of three singles issued on the Monument label by a Nashville based quartet of brothers known as the Fuller Brothers.’I Saw Her First’ b/w’Look Baby (The Sun Is Shining)’ were both composed by husband and wife team, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. The plug side presented here, is a prime example of the’Wall Of Sound’ period by arranger Ray Stevens who was cranking out wonderful arrangements/productions for various artists in Nashville during the mid 1960’s. Produced by Monument Records owner, Fred Foster, it was recorded at his Nashville Studio and issued in June 1965. The backing track of’I Saw Her First’ features an intoxicating combination of strings, echo, horns, percussion and drum fills galore. The flip is a dreamy teen affair sounding similar to the early recordings of the Osmond Brothers. The quality of both the A and B sides provided a nice value for records buyers but unfortunately, it was flopsville on this release as well as the second and final single the boys had with the company. The group appeared on a few random and obscure compilation LP’s before their known final single for Decca in 1969 credited as the Four Fuller Brothers. It’s a pity that not a shred of information is to be found regarding the first names of the group members or if they recorded under a different group name or individually.

Joanne Engel – He’s Looking This Way(1965/02)
タイトルは「彼はこちらを見ている」の意。
シングル “Don’t Wait Up For Me, Mother” のB面。

Here we have the flipside to the sixth of only seven known singles issued by Miss Joanne Engel.’He’s Looking This Way’, composed by the team of Bill Giant, Bernie Baum and Florence Kaye, it is one of those recordings that should have been given its own A-side release as it is really that good. A snappy, slickly orchestrated production with Joannes strong lead vocal supported by a wonderful harmonic female background group gave the purchaser of this Amy Records release, their money’s worth of quality girl group material with the A-side,’Don’t Wait Up For Me, Mother’.
This songstress really was more than just a teen, girly pop vocalist. At the age of four, she made her television debut on the then popular program,’Star Time’, an American variety series that aired on the DuMont Television Network from 1950 to 1951. At the age of eight, she became professional, appearing in many radio and television commercials which included, Campbell’s Soup, Post Cereals, American Airlines, Chef Boy-Ar-Dee and Ipana Toothpaste. By the time she was twelve years old she began her recording career which brought her touring and appearances to promote her records. Not only did Miss Engel sing but played the piano and drums. As each of her recordings were released, her vocal chops matured quite impressively. Joanne’s vocal style was strong, pitch perfect and compatible to the likes of Connie Francis, Peggy March and Lesley Gore. As the 1960’s moved into the 1970’s, Joanne was honing her on point musical talent with finesse and put together a stage show that brough her to numerous hotels and supper clubs in the United States and abroad. With a musical repertoire of songs in English, Yiddish, Italian, Spanish and French, she shared the stage with the likes of Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, Nipsey Russell, Red Buttons, Don Rickles, Dom Delouise and many others.
Today, Joanne is married, retired and living in New York.

Floyd Henley and the Gospel Echo-Ettes – To See Jesus(1968)
「エッケ・ホモ」 (ecce homo) =この人を見よ に関連する歌かどうか、知らんけど(笑)

There is nothing that compares the energy and emotion that exudes from the sound of an on fire and musically anointed gospel vocalist, group or choir. This lone 1968 single on the Detroit based, Bilesse Records which was formed by Bill and Essie Moss and operated between 1966 and 1982 is a fine example of that fact and both sides of the disc are amazing. In a 2018 interview, Evelyn Turrentine-Agee, former Gospel Echo-Ettes group member recalled that in the mid 1960’s, the Gospel Echo-Ettes were the top number one group around Detroit. Managed by a fellow by the name of Floyd Henley, they recorded just one single for Bilesse Records of which both sides of the disc,’To See Jesus’ and’The Man From Galilee’ Henley also composed. Evelyn stated that the Gospel Echo-Ettes lead vocalist was Blanche Hayes but everyone called her “Baby Sister” and she was the lead voice on’To See Jesus’ while Evelyn took the lead on the flipside,’The Man From Galilee’. Tragically, Floyd Henley was killed in a car wreck one night and the group eventually disbanded. Evelyn left with fellow group member, Helena Berry and with the addition of another singer, called themselves the Gospel Warriors. When Evelyn embarked on a solo career, the other ladies continued to accompany her. In the early 1970’s, Blanche “Baby Sister” Hayes and a new ensemble of Gospel Echo-Ettes issued a single on the Su-Ann label entitled,’Up Above My Head’ which has become a collectible piece of soul/gospel vinyl.
It must be noted that the Gospel Echo-Ettes former manager, Floyd Henley is not to be confused with the New Jersey based soul singer who issued records on Kas-Mo and Ri-Cath as they are two different people.
