スウェーデンのカップルが、男の赤ちゃんに「Q」という名前をつけることの許可を求めて、同国の最高裁に上告した。上告書類から8日、明らかになった。
スウェーデンの裁判所は1月の控訴審で、同国の法律で1文字の名前が禁止されていることを挙げ、「Q」は子どもの名前として「適切ではない」との判断を示していた。
スウェーデン最高裁への上告書類によると、子どもの両親は、これまでの判断をくつがえすよう最高裁に求めているという。

とうぜん私の脳裏には坂本九（Kyu Sakamoto）の名が過（よ）ぎりました。もちろん戸籍上は大島九（おおしま・ひさし）なわけですが、「きゅう」と読ませても戸籍係は受け付けたはずです。
欧米でキリスト教文化の根づいてる国では、今も聖書に関連する名かそれ以前の神話などに由来する名をつけるのが普通で、移民のるつぼアメリカでも姓や名を聞いただけで、写真を見なくてもどこ系の移民かピンとくる場合が多い。そういう長い歴史がありますから、アルファベット１文字ではどうしても頭文字かコードネームとしか思えないのでしょうね。
むしろ私などは明治に入るまで日本で一般庶民に姓が無かったことの方が異常だと思いますね。
まぁ姓の無い人々だから「庶民」などと蔑称されたんでしょうけど。
