Bobby Womack – Trust Me(1976)

Roger Wolfe Kahn and his Orchestra – I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me(1927)

recorded March 2, 1927
Here’s the rarely-heard Take 3 of that early Jimmy McHugh hit…the version that 1927 record buyers took home with them, as opposed to the alternate Take 1 that was reissued by RCA over the years and is commonly posted elsewhere on the web. Points of comparison: the single runs a smidgen faster than the alternate, and the slightly uneven notes in the first trumpet passage don’t match up.

Mark Antonie – I Believe(1963)

Recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios in November 1963, another slab of vinyl to be tossed into the obscure bin. A decent little finger-snapper of a record by Mr. Antonie (whoever he is) that may not be the finest singer, but takes the old standard tune into uncharted territory. Nice backing track by L.A’s’Wrecking Crew’ with some interesting insertion of glockenspiel and energetic drum work.

The Beverly Hills Painters – Believe Me(1964)

The Rooks – Believe In You(1965/01)

The Hyperions – Believe In Me(1965/03)

This tune,’Believe In Me’, is the sweet soul flip-side of an echo drenched and extremely coveted Spectorian A-side production that is also one of the more collectible releases on the Chattahoochee label. As if it wasn’t extremely obscure already, the fact that there are two label variations of the plug side title;’Why You Wanna Treat Me THE WAY You Do’ and the rarer,’Why You Wanna Treat Me LIKE You Do’ add yet another wrinkle into the desirability. Recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios and released in March 1965, the subtle Perry Botkin Jr. arrangement on’Believe In Me’ is quite a contrast to his’Wall of Sound’ arrangement of the powerhouse dance floor side yet both tracks are equally musically intoxicating. L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ truly delivered the goods on this elusive single but the’group’ itself, the Hyperions appear to have only this skull crunching slab of L.A. soul to their musical resume and not much is known of their lineup. Curiously, Botkin recruited the vocal talents of the Blossoms to fill in on background vocals for’Believe In Me’.

Ketty Lester – Pretty Lies, Pretty Make Believe(1965/05)
Composer: Van McCoy
Producer: Jim Foglesong
Arranger: Bert Keyes

After recording one single for Everest Records in 1962, Ketty Lester (birth name Revoyda Frierson) moved to Era Records where she would issue 5 singles with the label, one of which,’Love Letter’s’, would become a world wide hit and her signature song. Lester then signed a contract with RCA Victor Records where two albums and five singles were issued. None of the recordings charted but that most certainly was not because of a lack of quality. A prime example is this tune, her final single with the label entitled,’Pretty Lies, Pretty Make Believe’. The first sense of exceptionalism with this disc is that the composer is the extremely gifted, Van McCoy and second, the arrangement was by the legendary, Bert Keyes. Once the needle hits the grooves, the listener is swept up instantaneously into an atmospheric and echo drenched musical jewel that Ketty’s emotive lead vocals wrap the listener in for the next 2 minutes and 47 seconds. Those familiar with Ketty’s Era recording of’Once Upon A Time’ will notice the similarities in this production which is a stunning lost masterpiece that deserves to shine.
It appears that the first known commercial version of’Pretty Lies, Pretty Make Believe’ was recorded by Connie Francis in September 1964 but not issued until 1995 on an obscure South African CD compilation. Columbia Records vocalist, Michelle Lee recorded her version about the same time as Ketty’s and was issued in May 1965 as was Ketty’s disc.

In late spring 1962, Daryll and Richards wrote a song intended for Annette Funicello entitled,’Ritchie’. Her record company in California passed on the song so they went about looking for a young teenage girl to record the tune. A friend of theirs associated with the Brill Building in New York City lived in Scarsdale, New York and knew of their search. He found a fifteen year old American-Italian girl by the name of Gloria Ravo who was attending Eastchester High School near Scarsdale. She auditioned with the music duo and recorded’Ritchie’ b/w’Ask’ which was eventually issued in July 1962 on the Laurie Records subsidiary label, Rust Records and credited to Gloria Dennis. The second Rust single,’See If I Care’ b/w’That’s My Boy’ appeared in January 1963 and was once again produced by Daryll and Richards. A two year and four month gap passed before Gloria’s final disc,’How Can I Be Sure (This Is Love)’ b/w/ I Go Where You Go’ was recorded in April 1965 and released in May 1965 as Laurie 3300.
No other known recordings by Gloria have appeared and as of at least 2014 she is still residing in New York.
