Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra – Let Me Dream(1940)
vocal: Bob Eberly

arr. Don Wilson
recorded April 9, 1940
Bob Eberly vocal. Future US Vice President (1925-29) Charles Gates Dawes wrote the instrumental tune “Melody” back in the year 1912. Though it would achieve its most lasting fame when transformed into the 1950s hit “It’s All In The Game,” this earlier set of lyrics was tried out in 1940, though the record itself failed to create much of a stir.

Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra – Melody(1942)

recorded June 17, 1942
“Melody” aka “It’s All In The Game”
Lushly arranged concert-style instrumental piece created at the same session that produced the Sinatra vocal hit “In The Blue Of Evening” and the second Dorsey recording (the one with strings) of “Sleepy Lagoon,” which was released by Victor on the flip side of the pictured Red Seal 10-incher.
Future US Vice President (1925-29) Charles Gates Dawes wrote the instrumental tune “Melody” back in the year 1912, but it would achieve its most lasting fame when transformed into the 1950s hit “It’s All In The Game.” Two years prior to the Tommy Dorsey version, brother Jimmy Dorsey had released this same tune as a vocal titled “Let Me Dream” (also available on YouTube).

Tommy Edwards – It’s All In The Game(1951/08 his first version)
orchestra conducted by LeRoy Holmes
全米18位。

In 1958 Tommy would successfully re-record with more modern arrangements several of the songs with which he had enjoyed some moderate sales activity during the early 1950s. Among them were two that are included in the 1951 HITS ARCHIVE collection: “The Morningside Of The Mountain” and this familiar tune, composed in 1912 by future US Vice President (1925-29) Charles Gates Dawes as the instrumental called “Melody.”
With new lyrics by Carl Sigman, this version of “It’s All In The Game” reached #18 on the best-sellers chart in autumn 1951. And in case you’re interested, two earlier versions of Dawes’ tune are also posted to this channel…the instrumental “Melody” by Tommy Dorsey (1942) and the vocal “Let Me Dream” by brother Jimmy Dorsey (1940).

Bettie Clooney – It’s All In The Game(1951)
orchestra & chorus conducted by Elliot Lawrence

The middle-born of the three Clooney siblings (between older sister Rosemary and younger brother Nick), Betty–spelled “Bettie” on this label–does a nice job on the familiar tune, composed in 1912 by future US Vice President (1925-29) Charles Gates Dawes as the instrumental called “Melody” with these new lyrics added in 1951. The first version by Tommy Edwards was the most successful release that year, though it was his chart-topping 1958 remake that is best-remembered.

Bob Crewe – Guessin’ Games(1957)

Crewe is best known for his many years of work with the 4 Seasons, plus his own instrumental hit, “Music to Watch Girls By” (1967), but this obscure record shows he could sing a bit like Johnnie Ray.

Composed by James Last as “Eine Ganze Nacht” and recorded with this English-language lyric by several American artists, this most-popular U.S. version of “Games That Lovers Play” is notable for 1) being Eddie’s last significant record hit, having just returned to the label with which had he first gained fame in the early’50s, 2) the unexpected appearance of the name “Nelson Riddle” on an RCA Victor record, with his perfectly executed Bert Kaempfert sound-alike arrangement, 3) Eddie’s amusing little fade-out tribute to Frank Sinatra and his recent “Strangers In The Night” hit.
