Recorded at United Recording in Hollywood in October 1965, this is the second of five singles issued between August 1965 and September 1966 by this elusive male/female vocal duo named simply, TWO PEOPLE （The first three discs were credited to’Two People’ while the fourth and fifth were credited to’The Two People’）.’Knock On Wood’, which was composed by Pat Briley, the male half of the duo, appears to be the only known recording by Two People which received television exposure. In December 1965, they performed the tune on ABC-TV’s,’Shivaree’. Considering that Two People would ultimately release five singles with a major record label one would think that more information could be found regarding the personnel but not in this instance. Pat Briley composed three of the groups ten released tracks and whose only known other recording was a lone solo single on the Whiz label in 1967. The identity of the female voice is somewhat of a mystery. Her voice has been credited on several sites as a young black vocalist by the name of Rita Martinson aka Helene Slack. Rita may have been credited as the composer on the A-side of the groups final Liberty single but the curious conflicting fact is that the December 1965 performance of Two People on’Shivaree’, the female half of the duo was a blonde white female similar in appearance to Mamas & the Papas singer, Michelle Phillips. The question is, was the white female singer the true voice on the recordings or was she hired to simply lip synch to Rita Martinson’s vocal for the televised performance? Or, was Rita the vocalist on at least one of the groups recordings. Hopefully this discrepancy will be rectified in the not so distant future and the musical history of the Liberty Records flash in the pan vocal duo, TWO PEOPLE, will be brought to light.
