　ペット用保険を扱うアニコム損保が、2月22日の”猫の日”に合わせ『第6回 猫の名前ランキング』を本日発表した。2009年2月1日～2010年1月31日までに、ペット保険「どうぶつ健保」に新規加入した0歳の猫、5,486頭の名前を集計した結果は、昨年5連覇を達成し不動の人気とされてきた【モモ】をおさえ、【ソラ】が初の首位を獲得した。

ホーリー・ゴライトリーの飼猫同様に名のない『吾輩は猫である』の猫は、
ビールで酔っ払い、水の入った大きな甕（かめ）の中へ落ちて、ついに死を覚悟し「南無阿弥陀仏南無阿弥陀仏。ありがたいありがたい」と観念する。
物語はそこで終っております。
長山靖生の『「吾輩は猫である」の謎』（文春新書）２１２ページには、他の作家がこの猫を生き返らせ後日譚を書いているとあります。それだけ誰でも知っている小説だったということなんでしょう。
ちなみに酔っ払った「吾輩」が踊りたくなった「猫じゃ猫じゃ」の猫は猫のことでなくて「芸者」のことです。

猫というと黒猫のジャケット写真でおなじみのジミー・スミス「The Cat」を思い出します。
これはいわゆるファンキーの流れを汲むソウル・ジャズということになります。

ジミー・スミスは「ザ・サーモン」というのも作ってますね。
これは鮭（salmon）じゃなくて、牧師の説教（sermon）のこと。
猫にかつぶしならぬ、「猫」の耳に念仏といったところでしょうか。

そういや、ジミー・スミス、ブルック・ベントンらが、１９６１年（日本公開は６２年）のアメリカ映画『荒野を歩け（Walk on the Wild Side）』のテーマ曲（ルー・リードのは同名異曲）を取り上げてます。
映画の冒頭で、土管から顔を覗かせてる黒猫が映し出されるんですが、
ジミー・スミスはあれ見て「The Cat」を作ったのかもしれません。

愛媛県大洲市、瀬戸内海の海上には、15人ほどの島民に対して100匹以上のネコが暮らす「青島」という小さな島が存在します。そんなネコ好きの心を激しく奮わせる猫島までは、定期旅客船が出ているとのことだったので、実際に愛媛県から船で行ってきました。
