パンタナールは南米のブラジルとパラグアイ、ボリビアの３か国にまたがる世界最大の湿原で、一部地域は世界遺産にも登録され多様な生物が生息している事で知られています。
ブラジルの国立宇宙研究所によりますと、今年１月から今月中旬までに森林火災がおよそ１万５０００件発生していて、観測を開始した１９９８年以降、もっとも多かった年の件数をすでに上回っています。
この森林火災によりブラジル国内では、すでにパンタナール全体の１２％以上にあたる、およそ１万９０００平方キロメートルが焼失しています。
火災の原因は、農家が雑草を処理する際の野焼きなどが原因とみられていますが、過去５０年間で最悪と言われる干ばつにより被害はさらに拡大しています。
ブラジル政府は、軍を投入するなどして消火活動にあたっていますが鎮火のめどはたっておらず、周囲の都市では煙による健康被害が報告されているほか、森が破壊されたことでジャガーなど希少な野生動物の生態系への影響も懸念されています。＜世界最大の湿原で森林火災１万件超 政府が軍を投入も – NHKニュース より一部引用＞

毎年 火災を繰り返してきたらしい。
ブラジルのあの大統領のことだから危機感薄いのかも。
雨期になれば火勢は衰え やがて消えるだろうが、せめて動植物の保護はやってほしいねぇ、、、
