海洋大気局（ＮＯＡＡ）は今回の洪水が５月末まで続き、向こう数週間で悪化する可能性があると指摘した。

ＮＯＡＡによると、ネブラスカ、アイオワ、ミズーリ各州などミシシッピ川、ミズーリ川上流域で大規模な洪水が起きている。豪雨や降雪及び急速な雪解けが原因で、地域によっては氷の塊が川の流れを遮り洪水を悪化させた。全米で約２億人が洪水のリスクにさらされる過去にない規模になる可能性を指摘した。
米メディア報道によるとネブラスカとアイオワで先週に起きた洪水で４人が死亡、両州知事は非常事態を宣言した。ネブラスカ州では約２０００戸の住宅、４１の商業施設が破壊された。畜産及び穀物農家に８億ドル以上の被害が出ているほか、道路や橋などインフラを含めた被害総額は１５億ドルにのぼるという。
アイオワ州でも農家に被害が出ている。アイオワ大豆協会のティム・バードール次期協会長によると、３月中旬に起きた猛吹雪が原因でミズーリ川が氾濫した。貯蔵庫が壊れ、トウモロコシが全て流れ出した農家もあり「被害規模はまだ把握できていないが、巨大な数字になる」（バードール氏）という。
米中西部の農家は米中貿易摩擦で対中輸出が落ち込み、経営状態が悪化している。米国最大の農家代表団体である米農業局連盟（ＡＦＢＦ）によると、１８年の中西部農家の破産率は前年比１９％増え、約１０年ぶりの高水準となった。洪水の被害拡大による農業経済の悪化が警戒される。＜米中西部で記録的洪水、農畜産業への打撃深刻に – 日本経済新聞 より一部引用＞
