At least 15 people were killed and homes were swept from their foundations on Tuesday as heavy rain sent mud and boulders sliding down hills stripped of vegetation by southern California’s recent wildfires.
Rescue crews used helicopters to lift people to safety because of blocked roads, and firefighters slogged through waist-high mud to pull a muck-covered 14-year-old girl out of the ruins of a home in Montecito, north-west of Los Angeles, where she had been trapped for hours. She was taken away on a stretcher.
Most deaths were believed to have occurred in Montecito, a wealthy enclave of about 9,000 people north-west of Los Angeles that is home to such celebrities as Oprah Winfrey, Rob Lowe and Ellen DeGeneres, said Santa Barbara County spokesman David Villalobos. Winfrey’s home survived the storm and slides. At least 25 people were injured.

At least 15 people have been killed in the wildcat mudslides that have ripped through Santa Barbara in California, and rescue crews with dogs and thermal-imaging equipment are busy searching the hills around the wealthy Los Angeles suburb.
Up to two dozen people are still missing after rain-driven mudslides swept through the coastal community, destroying homes, submerging cars, and sweeping everything from the roads as walls of mud rushed down from hillsides destabilised by the terrible fires of late November-early December.

米カリフォルニア州南部で豪雨により発生した土砂崩れについて、当局は１１日までに同州サンタバーバラ郡で１７人が死亡したと発表した。１７人が行方不明だとして、５００人を超える救急隊員が救助犬とともに捜索に当たっている。
９日午前３～６時に暴風雨に見舞われたサンタバーバラ郡では、洪水や土砂崩れで家屋１００棟が倒壊。３００棟が損傷を受けた。当局によると２８人が負傷した。
これまで沿岸警備隊のヘリなどが出動して数十人を救助したとしているが、モンテシトのロメロキャニオン地区では、がれきで道路をふさがれ避難できなくなった住民３００人が依然として救助を待っている状態だという。
この地域では、１２月に発生した大規模な山火事のために森林が焼失して、地盤がもろくなっていた。

カリフォルニアの中でも山が迫っている地域のため、鉄砲水のように一気に大量の泥流・土石流が押し寄せたものとみられる。
乾燥で山火事が多発したり、このように局地的に豪雨になったりと、異常気象の影響は年を追うごとに増大している。
