CCR’s final Top 40 single, lyrically explained by John Fogerty in 2013 (per Wikipedia): When I wrote this song, my life was pretty chaotic. I knew my marriage was going to break up. My band was falling apart. I was beginning to sense the darkness that was Fantasy Records. This song was inspired by my parents’ divorce when I was a young boy and the effect it had on me. At the time, they told me, “Someday, you’ll understand.” The truth of this is that you never do and I found myself facing this as a parent. The irony was painful and inescapable.

Kempy And The Guardians – Never(1966/11)

Frank Gorshin – Never Let Her Go(1966/06)

Out of Los Angeles in the summer of 1966, character actor, Frank Gorshin found himself in a Hollywood recording studio with David Gates producing and arranging two sides of an intended single eventually released on the A&M label. Having issued a few singles in the past, Gorshin was not a newcomer to vocalizing however, this new single was intended to cash in on his new found fame for his role as the’Riddler’ on the campy ABC-TV series,’Batman’. The A-side entitled,’the Riddler’, was written by Mel Torme and was a 2:11 novelty with him cackling and warbling in character as the TV villain. The hidden jewel is the flip side. A David Gates composition that had been recorded beautifully both by Jody Miller and Glenn Yarbrough in 1965, Frank Gorshin takes the tune to another dreamy level. It’s really unfortunate that a recording as classy as his version of’Never Let Her Go’ wasn’t issued separately and promoted as an’A’ side.

Deena Johnson – I’ll Never Let You Down(1965/11)
Joshie Jo Armstead

The last of four singles that Joshie Jo Armstead recorded credited as Deena Johnson. Miss Armstead began her musical career singing in church and while in her early teens, she providing background vocals for Bobby Bland and other bands and singers. By 1960, at the age of 16 she became one of the Ikettes with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. As an Ikette she managed to have a hit with the song,’I’m Blue’ for Atco Records in 1962. Leaving the Turners, Joshie settled in New York and worked as a background vocalist and singing jingles and demo recordings. She began recording as a soloist under the pseudonym, Deena Johnson to, in her words, “avoid being tracked down by Ike Turner.” She eventually met Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson and the trio began composing songs quite successfully together. When Ashford & Simpson joined Motown in 1967, Armstead relocated to Chicago with her record producer husband and they set up Giant Productions. She continued to record there and when her marriage dissolved, she moved back to New York where she worked non stop. She sang as a session background vocalist, composed music, performed in a Broadway musical as well as did some film work, she worked as a fashion designer, and even managed a professional boxer. To this day Joshi Jo Armstrong is still out there working.

Mary Wells – Never, Never Leave Me(1965/02/19)

After a successful, hit-making five years with Motown Record Corporation in Detroit, Mary Wells abruptly left the company in hopes of greener pastures (and larger royalties) with 20th Century-Fox Records. Along with a whopping $200,000 cash advance from the label, there was also the vague dangling carrot of possible motion picture opportunities. The union with 20th Century-Fox lasted only a year in which a total of two albums and six singles were issued. The recording sessions which were held in New York and Chicago, produced some rather nice results but nowhere near the impact that Motown was able to create with Wells. The third single release from February 1965 was a wonderful double-sider,’Never, Never Leave Me’ b/w’Why Don’t You Let Yourself Go’. Uncredited producer for the recording was that of Chicago based, Carl Davis. No arranger was noted. The record received substantial radio play with televised performances that propelled the disc to peak at #54 on the Billboard’Top 100′ and #15 on their R&B chart. The plug side was composed by husband and wife team, Mickey Gentile and Jennie Lee Lambert. In 2012, record industry consultant, Kevin Goins, interviewed composer, Mickey Gentile while preparing the liner notes that would accompany the’Mary Wells 20th Century Fox’ CD compilation. According to Gentile, Burt Bacharach had asked him to come up with a track to fill a then upcoming Dionne Warwick album. Mickey cut a demo recording of’Never, Never Leave Me’ with Dionne’s sister, Dee Dee Warwick providing the vocal. Some time later at an office visit, Mary Wells happened to be nearby within earshot, and after hearing the demo, snatched it off the turntable and placed it in her purse right in front of Mickey and his wife and co-writer Jeannie Lambert. And the rest is as they say…..history.
The audio for this video was lifted from the 1965 stereo 20th Century-Fox LP. While the record sleeve and labels indicate’stereo’, sadly, there is virtually no separation on this and all of the other tracks other than a minuscule bit of’rechanneled stereo’ during playback.

The Whispers – Never Again(1965/01)
Composer: V. House, Ed Townsend

Formed in 1963 in Watts, California, this is the second of a dozen singles issued on the Dore label by the Whispers. Recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios in December 1964 and issued in early January 1965, the Vince House and Ed Townsend composition of’Never Again’ is as about as sweet, L.A. soul as it gets. The Whispers deliver the harmonic vocals with perfection above the Gene Page arrangement provided by an ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’. The group left Dore in 1969 and recorded for Soul Clock and Janus Records before making it to true hit status that would come when they signed with Solar Records in 1975. Big hits such as,’And The Beat Goes On’,’It’s A Love Thing’ and’Rock Steady’.

Jody Miller – Never Let Him Go(1965/01)

From the Capitol Tower in Hollywood, the session for this classy double-sider in late December 1964 displays yet another fantastic Girl Pop arrangement by a young David Gates. While he is most known by his success with the group BREAD, the wealth of material he wrote, produced, arranged as well as sang on in the decade prior to the formation of that Soft Rock band is astounding. Released in early January 1965,’Never Let Him Go’, the A-side of this disc, which is also a David Gates composition, is a dreamy and absolutely stunning production and probably one of the best singles Miss Miller issued while at Capitol. Gates would also arrange another beautiful version of the song later in the year with Glenn Yarbrough on RCA Victor and another stellar version by Frank Gorshin on A&M in 1966.
‘Be My Man’, the flipside, is presented in it’s first incarnation and would be recorded a few months later again with David Gates arranging on a magnificent Spectoresque version by fourteen year old, Suzy Wallis on RCA Victor. Jody’s outing of’Be My Man’ is one that is so good that it no doubt could have been easily issued on it’s own as another A-side rather than relegated to the backside.
Jody Miller’s signature big voice tackles both sides of this disc flawlessly and L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ are in fine form supplying the David Gates arranged backing tracks along with the addition of the GIRLFRIENDS (Gloria Jones, Carolyn Willis, Nanette Williams) on background vocals.

The Cookies – I Never Dreamed(1964/06)

Recorded in New York City in May 1964, this stellar Spectorian Girl Group release was the last of five singles this group would issue on the Dimension label and regarded by many as their finest performance put to tape. Composed and produced by Gerry Goffin and Russ Titleman with a beautiful arrangement by Carole King, Earl Jean McCrea and Dorothy Jones provide the harmonic background vocals behind the impassioned lead vocals of Margaret Ross. With a combination of Goffin, King & Titelman it is an absolute shame that this marvelous Girl Group masterpiece did not chart nationally. The passing of time however, has placed it at the top of many a music collectors want list. Today, Margaret Ross Williams is still out their performing and sounding as good as ever.
