東京大空襲のとき、川や運河は遺体で溢れ、焼け跡には焼死体特有の黒くツルンとした屍（しかばね）が、あるいはもはや分かち難く癒着した「塊」が、熱を帯びてくすぶっておりました。それらはそのまま棺（ひつぎ）にも入れられず埋められましたが、戦後、掘り起こし、火葬しなおして、納骨されたという経緯がありました。
もちろんすべての遺体が処置しなおされたわけではなく、今もときどきビル工事などで骨が出てきたりします。
東京は、そうした方々の阿鼻叫喚、痛哭、無念、痛み、哀しみが封じ込められている場所でありまして、なればこそ鎮魂・慰霊、そして不戦の誓いということがどうしても必要になってくるわけです。
似たようなことは大日本帝国による中国重慶への無差別空爆でも起きたわけで、我々は被害者である前に加害者であったということもけっして忘れてはいけません。
あれから半世紀以上が経過し、戦争ではないにせよ、ふたたび多くの人命が一度に失われる惨事が起きてしまいました。３週間たっても遺体の処置という喫緊の問題さえ見通しが立たない状態です。
原因が天災であるだけに、よけいにやり切れませんね。
何万という「死」に対して、私たちは何を言えばいいのか。
日本の再建を誓えばいいのか。
来るべき東京直下型地震、東南海地震などへの備えを約すればいいのか。
私には分かりません。正直まだ混乱しています。
人間は愚かであり、また無力です。
我々はほんとうは超えることの出来ない壁に囲まれた小さな小さな世界にいるのかもしれない。少なくとも逃げることは出来ません。
我々の住む世界はここにしかないのです。
ここで泣いたり笑ったり悲しんだり嘆いたり喜んだり愛したりするしかない。
それしかないんですよ。
福島第１原発が見れるライブカメラがあるというので見たら、ライブ映像ではなく、「５時～１９時の間、１時間間隔で配信」してるだけでした。

福島第１原発で作業に当たる自衛隊員や従業員らが着用している防護服。被（ひ）曝（ばく）を恐れる一般の人からも、取り扱い業者に問い合わせが来始めた。ただ、ほとんどの防護服は今回の事故で放出されている放射線まで防ぐ能力はない。関係者は「きちんと体を洗ったりすることの方が重要。一般の方にはお勧めできない」としている。

一般が購入できるのは、放水業務に当たる東京消防庁が使う防護服だ。米の化学会社デュポンが製造する「タイベック」という生地を使っっている。
ただ、今回の事故で問題となっている放射線（ガンマ線）は防げない。防げるのは、放射能を帯びた「物質」が付着すること。非常にしみにくい素材で作られたレインコートのようなものにすぎない。
