40 dead in Pakistan earthquake

Islamabad, Pakistan （CNN ） — A deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Pakistan on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The death toll rose quickly, with at least 40 deaths reported in the quake’s aftermath in Awaran in Balochistan province, a military official said.
In addition to the fatalities, “dozens have been injured,” said Asad Gilani, the province’s home secretary.
Officials fear people are trapped in the rubble.
The province declared a rescue emergency. All officials were put on high alert, and doctors at hospitals were on standby.
More than 200 troops have been sent to the area to provide aid, including rescue teams and medical teams, Lt. Col. Abid Ali Askari said.
The earthquake occurred in a remote area, said Zahid Rafi, principal seismologist of the National Seismic Monitoring Center.
With a depth of about nine miles （about 15 kilometers ）, the quake struck 43 miles （69 kilometers ） northeast of Awaran and 71 miles （114 kilometers ） northwest of Bela, the USGS said.
Some mud-walled homes fell in Awaran, said Latif Kakar, director of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Balochistan.

震源の深さ２０キロでＭ７・７では、かなり揺れが大きかったろう。
例によって家屋倒壊の犠牲者が多そうだ。
パキスタンといえば２日前の２２日、北西部ペシャワルの教会でキリスト教徒を狙った連続自爆テロが起きて、礼拝中の信者７８人が死亡、１２０人が負傷するという宗教テロ事件が起きたばかり。
こういう国では地震対策どころじゃないんだろうなぁ・・・

Mud houses in the mountains crumbled as a 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook western Pakistan early on Tuesday. Meanwhile, on the coast, residents of Gwadar saw a solitary island rise from the sea.
Older residents of the coastal town said the land emergence was déjà vu — an earthquake in 1968 produced an island that stayed for one year and then vanished, Ali Mohammad, 60, and Azeem Baloch, 57, told NBC News.
Seismologists suspect the island is a temporary formation resulting from a “mud volcano,” a jet of mud, sand and water that gushed to the surface as the temblor churned and pressurized that slurry under the ocean floor.
“Sandy layers underground are shaken, and sand grains jiggle and become more compact,” John Armbruster, a seismologist at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University told NBC News. The shifting sand layers are compacted and pressurize the water, which gushed upwards, carrying mud and sand along with it.
