This memorable novelty, co-written by Ross Bagdasarian (aka David Seville) and his famed Pulitzer-Prize-winning author cousin William Saroyan, was introduced in the off-Broadway production “The Son.” Running just under two minutes and sporting a lively harpsichordian arrangement, this Clooney recording quickly became a popular favorite and her first #1 hit. Kay Starr also reached the national top-20 with her version, and there was the comic answer record “Where’s-A Your House” by Robert Q. Lewis (both tracks included in this 1951 collection).

Mike Clifford – Out In The Country(1966/12)

A career in the music biz which began in 1959, former teen singer, Mike Clifford is still at it. He truly is one of the American singers alive who transitioned from the late 1950’s and struggled though the onslaught of the British Invasion and as the years passed, continued to reinvent himself. Most notably known for his 1962 hit produced by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller on United Artists Records entitled,’Close To Cathy’, several of his later recordings were actually some of the finest work that he did. A 1965 deal with Cameo/Parkway Records had Mike teaming up with legendary arranger/producers Jack Nitzsche and Perry Botkin, Jr. In September 1965, two of the four known Nitzsche involved recordings were issued as a single, the Spectorian’Before I Loved Her’ b/w’Shirl Girl’ as Cameo 381 but’Marianne’ and’Nothing Can Stand In My Way’ which were two stunning tracks from the motion picture,’Village Of The Giants’ were shamefully left in the can. Fortunately, Mike has in his possession, an original Sunset Sound Recorders acetate disc containing the the two songs. At a February 1966 session with Perry Botkin, Jr. at Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios, Mike recorded,’Out In The Country’ b/w/’Countin’. The record was rushed released and Mike performed the song on an episode of ABC-TV’s,’Shivaree’ that was filmed on location at the Santa Monica pier.
Between 1967 – 1968, Mike was signed to the Capitol Records subsidiary label, Sidewalk Records followed by three singles at American International records in 1970 – 1971 and lastly on tingle on the tiny, Lunar Way-Jack label in 1972.
On into the 1970’s and beyond, Mike would continue to perform his music along with appearing in musical theater. Residing in Los Angeles, he continues to record new music which is available on-line as well as through independently produced CD projects.

Then in April 1967 on the CBS-TV special “Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution,” a very-impressed Leonard Bernstein discussed the record and introduced Janis performing “Society’s Child.” It was then that the record took off. Before it was Johnny Carson’s theme
The Walt Disney company’s record label Buena Vista boasted both Mouseketeer singing star Annette Funicello and veteran composer-arranger Tutti Camarata, who conducted the studio sessions. In early 1960 each of them released versions of this Paul Anka-penned song, Annette in a vocal titled “It’s Really Love” (included in her “Annette Sings Anka” LP) and the posted instrumental 45 single by Tutti’s Trumpets called “Toot Sweet.” Anka’s original vocal recording of “It’s Really Love” had been heard in the soundtrack of the early 1959 French film “Faibles Femmes” (aka “Women Are Weak,” aka “Three Murderesses”).
Then in 1962, upon the departure of Jack Paar from NBC’s “Tonight Show,” this tune was chosen as the program’s new opening theme; but part of the deal was that new host Johnny Carson would take over publishing rights and also have his name added as co-writer of Anka’s song, thus receiving a major chunk of the performance royalties. So we commonly see the Anka-Carson composer credit associated with what has over the years become best known as “Johnny’s Theme.”
