Cyclone Chapala a Rare, Destructive Landfall in Yemen

Cyclone Chapala made an extremely rare landfall along the Gulf of Aden coast of Yemen Tuesday, triggering massive rainfall flooding in a desert location unaccustomed to tropical cyclone landfalls.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the agency sanctioned by the World Meteorological Organization for issuing official tropical cyclone bulletins for the Arabian Sea, the center of Chapala made landfall about 44 miles (71 kilometers) southwest of Al Mukalla, Yemen, as of 7 a.m. Tuesday Yemen time.
At that time, IMD estimated the cyclone’s maximum sustained winds from 75-80 mph (120-130 kph), a Category 1 equivalent storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, the first such intensity landfall in southern Yemen in at least 55 years. (More on the historical perspective is below.)

The coast of Yemen, an area unaccustomed to dealing with the devastation of tropical systems, has taken a direct hit from the powerful and dangerous Cyclone Chapala.
As Chapala made landfall Tuesday, it dumped enormous amounts of rainfall on the arid coast – as much as a decade’s worth, according to some forecasts. This caused major flooding and swamped entire towns.

一週間ほど前、メキシコ沖で観測史上最強のハリケーンが発生しましたが、今度は、アラビア海で記録的なサイクロン・チャパラが発生しています。
チャパラは、２００７年のサイクロン・ゴヌに次いで、史上２番目に強いサイクロンです。しかも、未だかつてサイクロンによる襲撃を受けたことのないイエメンに接近しており、イエメン史上初の上陸サイクロンとなる恐れがあります。
ところ変われば、名前も変わるもので、台風は発生場所が異なると名称も変わります。大きく分けると、日本近海など太平洋北西部で発生するものが「台風」、太平洋東部や大西洋で発生するのが「ハリケーン」。そして、インド洋（アラビア海含む）でできるのが「サイクロン（Cyclonic Storm）」です。台風と同じく、最大風速は秒速１７メートル以上です。
インド気象局の予想によると、チャパラは現地時間月曜夜（日本時間火曜朝）頃、イエメン東部に上陸する見通しです。上陸前にやや弱まる見込みですが、問題は雨量です。アメリカ海洋大気庁は、２日間で８００ミリの雨を予想しています。イエメンは砂漠の国。年間平均雨量は沿岸でも１００ミリほどしか降りません。つまり、８年分に相当する雨が一気に降ることになります。洪水により壊滅的な被害が起こることは必至です。

砂漠の国、中東のイエメンに、観測史上初めてサイクロンが上陸。街は、濁流にのみ込まれた。
地平線の向こう側、分厚い雲の中に放たれる稲光。
その雲の下では、すさまじいほどの豪雨が、街を襲っていた。
ここ、中東のアラビア半島に位置するイエメン。
３日、この大雨とは無縁の砂漠の国に、サイクロン「チャパラ」が上陸した。
マンションの住人がベランダから撮影した、濁流が街をのみ込む一部始終。
住宅の間を縫うように流れる濁流。
かろうじて、狭い橋に引っかかり、止まった車。
近くの人が、乗っている人の救出を試みた。
車の先には、荒れ狂う濁流。
しかし、１分後、懸命な救助活動もむなしく、運転手は、濁流の中にのみ込まれてしまった。

なぜ、サイクロンは、イエメンを襲ったのか。
２０１５年、インド洋の海水温が、例年より1度高く、サイクロンが発生しやすい状況に。
それに加え、インド洋で発生したサイクロンは、通常、北上し、インド東側のベンガル湾へと向かうが、今回は、上空に東風が強く吹き、イエメンの方向に流れやすくなっていた。
このサイクロンで、少なくとも３人が死亡。
内戦状態が続くイエメンに追い打ちをかけるように、大きな被害をもたらしている。
