A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake has struck in northern Afghanistan and was felt in a large area from northern India to Pakistan where dozens of people were killed.
The US Geological Survey put the epicentre of Monday’s quake near Jarm in Afghanistan’s northeast, 250km from the capital Kabul and at a depth of 213km.
At least 12 students were killed in a girl’s school in Afganistan’s Takhar province, sources told Al Jazeera, adding that the death toll was expected to increase.
Hikmat Fasi, a resident of Parwan Province in northern Afghanistan, said the quake caused a lot of damage in the area.
“We are safe but I saw a lot of buildings collapse,” Hikmat Fasi said. “It [earthquake] caused severe damage to our area. We are just praying.”
According to the Inter-Service public relations office, all military hospitals and helicopters were put on standby and high alert.
Strong tremors were also felt in New Delhi and Islamabad, residents said, as authorities in India and Pakistan issued warnings for strong aftershocks.

Kabul, Afghanistan （CNN）　A magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck southern Asia on Monday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
“Reports coming of damage and injuries in north eastern Afghanistan,” Abdullah Abdullah, chief executive of Afghanistan, said in a tweet. “Disasters authorities to meet within the hour and respond to the needs.”
The USGS issued an orange alert on the quake. “Significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread. Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response,” the USGS said.
The Reuters news agency reported at least 17 people dead in Afghanistan and 12 dead in Pakistan. Local news agencies quickly reported death tolls in the dozens.
Afghan broadcaster Tolo TV showed images of collapsed structures.
The epicenter was 45 kilometers （28 miles） south-southwest of Jarm, Afghanistan, near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. CNN teams in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan all felt strong tremors. A USGS map showed that shaking traveled into Tajikistan as well.
The quake’s epicenter was at a depth of 213.5 kilometers （132.7 miles）. The USGS initially reported it as magnitude 7.7 and then revised it to 7.5.

　山間部にあるスワート渓谷では少なくとも９人が死亡し、病院に負傷者１９４人が運び込まれた。カイバルパクトゥンクワ州の州都ペシャワルでは、１６世紀にムガール王朝が建造した城塞（じょうさい）の一部が崩れたほか、病院に負傷者１００人以上が搬送された。中国とパキスタンを結ぶ戦略道路カラコルム・ハイウェーは、土砂崩れで一部区間が通行止めになった。
　アフガニスタンでは、震源に近いタカール州で学校が倒壊し、少なくとも１３人が死亡したと地元テレビが伝えた。震源地があるバダクシャン州でも大きな被害が出ている模様だが、カブールで電話回線が不通になるなど通信網が寸断され、被害の全容は把握しきれていない。アフガン政府は緊急対策会議を招集した。

日本時間の２６日午後６時すぎ、アフガニスタン北部を震源とするマグニチュード７．５の大きな地震があり、アフガニスタンと隣国のパキスタンで、これまでに合わせて１００人以上が死亡し、当局が被害の確認を急いでいます。
アメリカの地質調査所によりますと、アフガニスタン北部で現地時間の２６日午後１時３９分ごろ（日本時間の２６日午後６時９分ごろ）、マグニチュード７．５の大きな地震がありました。
震源は、アフガニスタンの首都カブールから２５０キロ余り北東で震源の深さはおよそ２１２キロとみられています。
この地震で隣国のパキスタンやインドそれにウズベキスタンやタジキスタンなどの広い範囲で揺れが確認されました。
パキスタンの国営テレビは、これまでに９５人が死亡、６００人近くがけがをしたと伝えました。
また、アフガニスタンでは、北部タハール州の当局者によりますと、地震が発生した際、現地の学校で女子生徒たちが一斉に避難しようとして折り重なるようにして倒れ１２人が死亡、およそ３０人がけがをしたということです。

アフガニスタン北部で２６日に起きた大地震で、同国と隣国のパキスタンを合わせた死者数は２７日、少なくとも３６０人を超えた。
　両国とも震源に近い山岳地帯での救助活動は難航しており、政府が被害状況の把握を急いでいる。
　アフガンでは震源に近い北東部の被害が深刻で、タハール州の州都タロカンでは学校が倒壊し、多くの女子生徒が圧死した。地元当局者によると、地震発生直後、校舎の倒壊でパニックになった生徒数百人が校舎の外に殺到し、折り重なるように倒れた。この事故で少なくとも女子生徒１２人が死亡、４０人が負傷した。校舎は耐震性が低いレンガ造りだったという。
