Scientists Observe Asteroid Eros Closest Ever to Earth
hoped by scientists to create history again as it has been found to make the closest approach to Earth on Tuesday. The asteroid has been noted to make its closest move towards Earth since the year 1975.
The group of scientists has found that however 433 Eros had already made a history when it was approached by the NASA’s NEAR Shoemaker probe in the year 2000. The Shoemaker orbited Eros and landed on its surface for time first time.
As per the findings of the report, 433 Eros, which was first discovered in the year 1898, was the first ever near-Earth asteroid. It has been revealed that it orbits Earth every 1.76 years and approaches it coming nearly within twenty million miles.

ＮＡＳＡによると、日本時間１月３１日２０時頃、大きさ３４ｋｍもある小惑星「433 Eros」が３５年ぶりに地球に大接近したとのことです。
ギリシア神話の愛の神にちなんだ名前にもインパクトがありますが、宇宙規模からするとニアミスとも言える急接近をしたそうです。
ピーナツの形をした小惑星エロスは、１８９８年に初めて発見された地球近傍小惑星で、２番目に大きなものとされています。

　１月２３日から入り込んでくる強烈な寒気により日本付近の気温は平年より約２～３度低い状態が続く見通しで、日本海側を中心に雪が降りやすい状態になる。２週間以上におよぶ長い寒波は、昨年クリスマス近辺に襲来した寒波を超える規模と見られ、「三八豪雪（昭和３８年１月豪雪）」、「五六豪雪（昭和５６年豪雪）」「平成１８年豪雪」に並ぶ規模になることが予想される。

　この寒波の規模についてリリースでは、これまでの天候経過や「２週間以上にも及ぶことが予想される（勢力の）寒波」、さらには上空の気圧配置の動向、ラニーニャ現象中であることと合わせ、豪雪によって災害史に名を残す『三八豪雪（昭和３８年１月豪雪）』や『五六豪雪（昭和５６年）』、『平成１８年豪雪』に匹敵する規模になる可能性があるとしている。

気象庁が豪雪に命名したのは、
「昭和３８年１月豪雪」　――通称「三八（サンパチ）豪雪」
「平成１８年豪雪」　　　――通称「一八（イチハチ）豪雪」
の２件だそうで、
これに倣い、
昭和５６年の豪雪を一般に「五六（ゴウロク）豪雪」と言ったりするそうです。

　北日本の上空に零下４２度を下回る寒気が流れ込んでいる影響で、３１日は北日本から西日本にかけて日本海側を中心に大雪となった。降雪は２月２日をピークに２月３日ごろまで続く見込み。

今回の大雪による死者は５２人となった。このうち約７割が６５歳以上の高齢者だという。
　また、３３５人が重傷、４１２人が軽傷を負っている。
　「平成１８年豪雪」では、雪下ろしでの事故などで、全国で１５０人以上が死亡した。気象庁は、新潟県や長野県の山沿いの積雪量は「平成１８年豪雪」に匹敵するとして警戒を呼びかけている。
